چکیده

Turbiditic sandstones from the mid–Late Cretaceous Tianba Flysch sequence are well exposed near Tianba in the north Nieru Valley, southern Tibet, and contain significant amounts of chrome-rich spinels. Microprobe results show that the spinels have a well-developed Fe-Ti trend and have Cr/( ) 0.4–0.65, Mg/( ) 0.3–0.9, and TiO2 2 Cr Al Mg Fe 11%. The occurrence of melt inclusions, and well above 0.2% TiO2 contents, shows that a volcanic suite of rocks was the source of these Cr-rich spinels. Specifically, these spinels compositionally resemble spinels from intraplate basalts (e.g., Hawaii and Disko Island, western Greenland) rather than from ophiolitic ultramafic or gabbroic material expected in an intraoceanic subduction system associated with the closing of the Neo-Tethys. On the basis of paleotectonic reconstruction, the presence of mid–Late Cretaceous fossils in the strata, and the limited range of chemical compositions, we suggest that 117-Ma volcanics of the Rajmahal-Kerguelen hot spot were the source for the chromerich spinels in the Tianba Flysch.

Mesozoic and Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the Shiquanhe area of western Tibet

[1] In the Shiquanhe area of far-western Tibet, midCretaceous strata lie unconformable on ophiolitic melange and Jurassic flysch associated with the Bangong-Nujiang suture zone. On the basis of our mapping and geochronologic studies, we suggest that these Cretaceous strata were shortened by >57% over a north south distance of 50 km during Late Cretaceousearly Tertiary time. The Late Cretaceous ...

Magmatic and Tectonic Evolution of Southern Tibet and the Himalaya

The Himalaya-Tibetan orogen has become the paradigm for continental collision and is central to deciphering continental tectonics. Neogene extension in the orogen is not predicted by plate tectonic theory, and its significance is widely debated. In the Himalaya, north-south extension is restricted to the Southern Tibetan Detachment System (STDS), which juxtaposes the High Himalayan Crystalline ...

The study area known as ‘Chahar-Dahaneh’ is part of the Iranian southeast ophiolites related to Alpian-Himalayan Mesozoic orogeny belt, and is located in the western margin of the Makran subduction zone. Chahar Dahaneh peridotite section consists of three major lithologies including: 1.dunite lenses 2. harzburgites and 3. Lherzolite. Based on electron microprobe analysis ,we estimated pressure ...

کانی شناسی و سنگ‌زائی کروم‌اسپینل‌های توده‌ی فراقلیایی رودان، استان هرمزگان

The studied area is located in the north of Rudan city and is a part of Kahnuj - Rudan - Minab ophiolite belt. The studied rock are harzburgite and lherzolite and are composed of olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and chrome – spinel (as a minor). According to microprobe data, the amount of MgO in the olivines ranges between %50.17 to %50.55, so these olivines are forsterite. Clinopyroxenes ...

Provenance of the Upper Cretaceous to Eocene Gosau Group around and beneath the Vienna Basin (Austria and Slovakia)

Chemistry of detrital garnets, chrome spinels and tourmalines of 30 selected samples in combination with the general heavy mineral distribution from 523 sandstone samples of the Upper Cretaceous to Eocene Gosau Group of the eastern part of the Eastern Alps and the western West Carpathians result in an advanced picture of sedimentary provenance and palaeogeographic evolution of that area. Garnet...
